History.

The Hawker Typhoon, a British single-seat fighter-bomber, was developed by Hawker Aircraft in the early 1940s. Originally designed as a high-altitude interceptor to replace the Hawker Hurricane, it encountered numerous development challenges, including engine reliability issues with its Napier Sabre powerplant.

Introduced in 1941, the Typhoon featured a powerful 24-cylinder, 2,180 horsepower engine, capable of speeds over 400 mph. It had a robust structure, a bubble canopy for improved pilot visibility, and heavy armament, including four 20mm cannons and provisions for bombs or rockets.

The Typhoon's initial role as a high-altitude fighter was limited by performance issues at altitude, but it found its niche as a formidable low-altitude ground-attack aircraft. By 1943, the Typhoon excelled in this role, providing close air support and destroying enemy armour and infrastructure with its rockets and bombs. It was instrumental during the Normandy Invasion and the subsequent Allied advance through Europe.

The Typhoon’s effectiveness in ground-attack missions significantly contributed to the Allied victory. Over 3,300 were built, and its success paved the way for its successor, the Hawker Tempest. The Typhoon remains celebrated for its role in transforming tactical air support during WWII.
