History

The F/A-18E Super Hornet is an advanced variant of the original F/A-18 Hornet, developed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing). It first flew in 1995 and entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1999, replacing the ageing F-14 Tomcat and complementing earlier Hornet models. The Super Hornet features a larger airframe, increased fuel capacity, upgraded avionics, and improved survivability. Designed for both air-to-air combat and ground attack missions, it operates primarily from aircraft carriers. It has proven highly versatile in conflicts from Iraq to Afghanistan. A two-seat version, the F/A-18F, and an electronic warfare variant, the EA-18G Growler, further extend its capability. The Super Hornet remains a key part of naval aviation and has also been exported to Australia.
