History.
The Saab AJS37 Viggen was a Swedish multirole fighter aircraft introduced in the 1970s, designed to defend Swedenâs neutrality during the Cold War. The Viggen (âThunderboltâ) was highly advanced for its time, featuring a canard-delta wing layout, which gave it excellent manoeuvrability and short take-off and landing capability â vital for operating from Swedenâs dispersed road bases. Powered by a Volvo RM8 turbojet (a licence-built Pratt & Whitney JT8D), it could reach Mach 2 and carry a wide array of weapons, from air-to-air missiles to anti-ship and precision strike munitions. The AJS37 was a later upgraded version, introduced in the 1990s, enhancing avionics and multirole capacity. Retired in 2005, the Viggen remains a celebrated symbol of Swedish innovation and independence.
